Have you seen my girl walking down these roads, She'll look like she's many miles from home, She lifted stones that were better left unturned, She's still got a few things left to learn, Have you seen my girl walking down these streets, With desolation in her eyes and blisters on her feet, So if you pass her and by chance you speak, Please pass her on a few of these lines from me, Girl I know that you ain't got much of this growing up left to do, And I swear that I will let you go but I'll keep watch over you, And you'll move through life like a hurricane, You just keep blowing through, Cos you ain't got much of this growing up left to do, And I remember when she barely reached my shoulder, I wish back then that I could have told her, Girl in this life you'll see fire and rain, Conductor of your own derailing train, And have you seen my girl walking round these parts, With pink bow ribbons in her hair and iced fingers on her heart, So if you see her running through the trees, Please pass her on these lines I have decreed, Girl I know that you ain't got much of this growing up left to do, And I swear that I will let you go but I'll keep watch over you, And you'll ignite like a fire girl, And I see you're burning blue, Cos you ain't got much of this growing up left to do, I heard she sometimes passes through this place, With poise and form and beauty and with grace, I heard she dances and sometimes she sings, That she found a man and now she wears a ring, And I hope that she remembers what I said, Girl if you ever need a place to come and rest your weary head, Don't look to me when you are all alone, You're stronger now, you'll make it on your own, Girl I know that you ain't got much of this growing up left to do, And I'll cry as I watch you go but I won't watch over you, And like the Autumn leaves you'll blow away from me, And that's exactly what you should do, Cos you ain't got no more growing up left to do, And like the falling snow you'll leave before you go, Something as beautiful as you, Cos you ain't got no more growing up left to do

Where have you been, all this time you've been away, Have you forgotten how to speak, or just forgotten how to say, The words you once inscribed with your razor blade pen, On the green cotton shackles of unfortunate men, The voice of the rising drops like lead to the ground, While the fallen ghosts of barbed wire coasts crawl upward to the sound, Of the lightning sky breaking, like you've seen it before, As the crimson stain of rebellion's refrain bleeds across the floor, Do you remember the rain, The hard, hard rain you said would fall, The fault lines of the great divide have changed, Cos it ain't rained round here for days, We miss you a lot my old faithful guide, As we swim against the current of the unchangeable tide, Most of all when darkness falls, no songs are sung of battles won, No lone horn piper calls outside Jericho's walls, But sometimes we still hear you sing, you are the avalanche, you are the howling wind, You are the ashes of the Phoenix' wings, you are Judas amongst Gods and Kings, Do you remember the rain, The hard, hard rain you said would fall, And you'll hide from the storm as your shelter door creaks, Cos it ain't rained round here for weeks, Where did you with your travelling show, Did you visit your father down on desolation row, Did you tell him in time, that you'd left us all behind, And the ones that you had left, were failing at your test, To stand not lie beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free, Is nothing less than the cold regress into distance memory, But the times they are still changing with you ever ticking clock, But senator your hallway doors have now begun to rot, So come cry your river by the glass or by the case, And wipe away the shades of grey that are painted on your face, Do you remember the rain, The hard hard rain you said would fall, You better pick up rocks, and sharpen spears, Cos it ain't rained round here for years, Do you remember the rain, The hard hard rain you said would fall, No-one hears the lonely generals call, Cos it ain't rained round here at all

Did I tell you that you're all I need, You're the only one I'm looking for, you're the only one I seen, Did I tell you you're a burning flame, That my hearts on fire and baby you're to blame, And they'll hear me from the rooftops, I'll be screaming out your name, They'll be woken from their dreams babe, And they'll all know who to blame, I'll go anyway you go my love, I'll do anything you do, I'll be stopped at foreign borders babe, But somehow i'll get through, There are many roads that lead from here, Many paths from which to choose, But i'll only walk the trail my love, That leads me back to you, When I hold you and I kiss your lips, We're the final act, the fade to black of the playwrights script, There's nothing else that makes me feel like this, Your love is an invasion, that I cannot resist, And they'll see us on the street, And your dress will catch the breeze, Come join us for this song man, We'll be dancing here all week, I'll go anyway you go my love, I'll do anything you do, I'll be stopped at foreign borders babe, But somehow i'll get through, There are many roads that lead from here, Many paths from which to choose, But i'll only walk the trail my love, That leads me back to you, And baby I will wake you, When the hour gets late, So darling if you need me, I'll be dancing in the morning rain, I'll go anyway you go my love, I'll do anything you do, I'll be stopped at foreign borders babe, But somehow i'll get through, There are many roads that lead from here, Many paths from which to choose, But i'll only walk the trail my love, That leads me back to you

I gave you a key in April, And you'd moved in by the Fall, I watched as you rearranged, The pictures hanging in my hall, We moved through life like two rolling stones, We played games to pass the time, We bought two tickets for life's rolling stock, And we rolled right down the line, And I gave you my heart, In the shadow darling of a whale bone arch, And I gave you my soul, As we stepped forth into the great unknown, So paint this in your memory, This love is a work of art, So make sure you frame it here, In the shadow of a whale bone arch, We'll stand together with our hands entwined, You'll say I'll love you until the end, And I'll give you in kind my heart and my mind, And all the time I have to spend, And wherever you go, I'm not far from you, I'll be right inside your heart, Just remember the sand, in the palm of your hand, And we'll never be apart And I gave you my heart, In the shadow darling of a whale bone arch, And I gave you my soul, As we stepped forth into the great unknown, So paint this in your memory, This love is a work of art, So make sure you frame it here, In the shadow of a whale bone arch,

You oft tell me stories, Of warriors glories, On battlefields far from here, But on revision of fact, Curiosities cat, Whispers softly in my ear, Says the words that you're reading, Cause your innocence to bleed in, To your upturned palms my dear, A reminder to be mindful, Of the statisticians minefield, And of all that is not all it appears, And the desktop generals call to me, And say cement this flag to your floor, But before you raise saluting hand recall, That there's more, than one soldier in this war, Your kinsmans deeds, Like a banquet feeds, The ambling crowds of change, Cast judgement and reactions, On trivial actions, But their inaction's the only thing to blame, It is seen but is blind, By more malleable minds, Whose resistance slowly wains, And I wonder child, As you outgrow your smile, Will you ever think of this strange, And do you hear him now as he calls to you, From the cloister how he wails, But before you fall on bended knee recall, That there's more, than one side to this tale, Those quick to condemn, More innocent men, Are slower dear to correct, The slow desecration, Of democratisation, In the juryless trials they have kept, Whilst your baying crowds, Only scream out loud, For the noose placed softly round his neck, It is not today's choices, That took all your voices, Given freely, as you slept, And the hangman's noose fits in your palm, And it fills your heart with rage, But remember to check, 'fore you place round their neck, If there's more, than one actor on the stage, You try move your pieces, As your opponent sits weeping, How can you take, when he has lost, And as you remove his king, You're left wondering, What your victory here has cost, Whilst sat in the stands, As you shake emptying hands, The bookkeeper takes all you have got, So draw from your coat, Your bullets of hope, And line up your best shot, And they'll run to you, and say lay down arms, If you feel no love, you'll feel no pain, But before you empty your magazine, Know there's more, than one player in this game, History is marked, By writers sat in the dark, How do you know what all you know is true, Crimson ink from their quill, Stains the notes in their till, And the inscriptions on the daggers that they threw, So brandish the key, You stand waving at me, And turn it like rusted screw, And you'll untwist the threads, Of the manuscripts of lead, And you'll fly like the cannonballs flew, So before your brow drops, the the floor you have mopped, Like your possessions they have stripped, Just remember my friend, that if this be the end, That there's more, than one author of the script

You and Me 03:49
We like to lay in bed and talk, And share the burden of our thoughts, But you've been known to fall asleep quite fast, And i'll watch you as you start to dream, With Vader Trooper on your sleeve, I always knew this love was gonna last, Cos baby you and me be like the leaves up in the trees, I'll fall down to the ground right beside you, Cos baby you and me be just like whispers on the breeze, I'll be flowers, you'll be morning dew, And like the trade-winds of the Pacific, You're weirdly specific, If you coloured in you'd be right inside the lines, You move the cushions on our sofa, So they're a couple inches closer, And you made me paint the hallway three damn times, Cos baby you and me know that the best things are for free, Thought the diamond on your finger you'll concede, Cos baby you and me be like an island in the sea, We'll have between us everything we need, And we'll travel round and see the world, I'll be your man you'll be my girl, I'll photograph the places we have been, Like Italian lakes and North Shore breaks, Venetian jazz and the Empire State, Are lithographed in to my memory, Cos baby you and me be digging holes into the beach, And kids will come and see what we have made, Cos baby you and me be holding hands to fall asleep, And I won't be letting go when you're awake, And we sometimes get frustrated, And complain it's antiquated, That they don't give us more time to hide away, But when you're disillusioned, I will speak of my conclusion, That this life's a test to test this love's to stay, Cos baby you and me be running wild and running free, And they'll never catch us now that much I know, Cos baby you and me be like the birds and all the bees, And I'll hold you like I'll never let you go, And sometimes I will think of this, Of holding hands or our first kiss, And i'll know that there are chapters still unread, But I never woke again, To hold your hand or say your name, I'll tell the angels of the lives we led, Cos baby you and me be making two turn into three, And it's kind of nice to think of days to come, Cos baby you and me know just where we want to be, And we'll get there like two lovers on the run, Cos baby you and me be like a padlock and its key, We'll fit together just like we're meant to do, Cos baby you me remember all the days like these, When we're grey and older you and me

Is that the train that's coming, Is that the train that I can see, Look at all the lonely people, And now the train's heading straight for me, Is that the horsemen by my door, Are they trailing unsaddled steed, Their ghostly hands present the reins, But I am not the one they seek, Cos it's only your love that I ride, On narrow trails of kindness dear, that you left behind, Are they chains beneath my feet, Do you hear the jailor's bell, His shadow cast against the iron bars, But I need no key to leave this cell, Cos it's only your love that I need, Your touch is like the warden's mark on the note that sets me free, Is that the wind I feel beneath, Are they the stars above my head, Choirs of angels dear call out to me, But I tell them it's not time for me yet, Cos it's only your love that I've lost, And though the scars on my soul will never grow old it was worth all that it cost

I'm breaking cover, But I think darling I'll be doing fine, And I've never seen another, And lord knows it's been a long long time, And I, I'll be coming on too strong, So I'll be taking all these chains off of me, And I won't look back I'm on a one way track, I'm gonna leave this behind, Cos you and me darling is all that I need, And we'll sail on clouds, with our heads unbowed, And you'll fly our flag full mast, Cos we're too far gone, and we're picking up speed too fast, Just promise me girl when I break cover, I'll be on your mind, Cos darling I'm breaking cover tonight, And I, I'm stepping out the darkness, But I will take no shade from the rising sun, Cos time is running by my love, like a southbound train, And it flees just like a mutineer on the run, But for now my love we will watch the sky, The shooting stars like arrows fly, Across the border of this twist of fate, Just promise me girl when I break cover, You'll be right behind, Cos darling I'm breaking cover tonight, Just promise me girl when I break cover, You will hold me tight, Cos darling I'm breaking cover tonight

about

Breaking Cover is my first album (for some reason calling it my debut album doesn't sound right!). I grew up listening to lyrics more than music, through a fairly diverse collection of songs and artists but I guess I owe a lot to Dylan (although who doesn't...) and Ray Charles (and the Gallagher brothers ;-) ). I've never played my stuff for anyone before so I hope you enjoy this record. Hopefully there'll be more to come.

credits

released March 19, 2017

All songs written, instruments played and tracks produced by Ray Zimmerman.
Backing vocals on "Do You Remember The Rain" and "Only Your Love" by Lucy Sutcliffe.
Thanks also to Paul Wilkinson, an outstanding musician who opened my mind to new arrangements, new chords and taught me how to stick with ideas in instrumentals.

NB. There are a few intentional references to Dylan in "Do You Remember The Rain". Bonus marks for spotting them but if you haven't heard the songs (and albums) below, please go buy them - they're far more important than anything on this album...

The Times They Are A Changing (1964 from the eponymous album)
Mr Tambourine Man (1965 from "Bringing It All Back Home")
Hard Rains Gonna Fall (1963 from "A Freewheelin' Bob Dylan)
Desolation Row (1965 from "Highway 61 Revisited")
