7 million people a year use San Francisco's cable car network to get around the city. San Fran itself has 43 hills ranging anywhere from about 200 to nearly 1000 feet, with sections of Filbert Street and 22nd coming in at nearly 32% gradient! At its peak in the late 1800's there were 23 lines but now only 3 remain (the Powell - Mason line, the Powell - Hyde line and the California line).
Fortunately, the cable car system has become as much of an icon as the yellow cab in NYC or the black cab in London and generates over $30m a year in fares. Unfortunately we just missed the cable car bell ringing contest which takes place in the 1st or 2nd weekend in July each year!
lyrics
Oh, these streets,
They're pretty narrow babe,
They're pretty steep,
Oh, these walls,
They're pretty high,
But they won't keep, me from you,
I've been holding your hand,
I've been watching you smile,
I've been walking for hours,
But I'd go another mile,
In fact baby I could walk around with you all day,
And I'd be singing,
Up and down, up and down, I don't know who knows where,
I don't know what we'll find or what we'll leave behind but baby I don't care,
And I'd be singing,
Up and down, baby up and down, I don't know where we'll be,
But we're holding hands and you should know that that's enough for me,
Oh these days,
They go too fast,
They're flying by,
Oh this love,
Will set us free,
We're gonna fly,
And we won't touch down babe for quite some time,
I've been making you laugh and you've been blowing my mind,
In fact baby I could fly around with you all day,
And I don't know how you want to do this,
But we'll do it anyway you like,
If you want to we can ride the boardwalk on a bright pink bike
